
SILSBEE ISD STARTS CLASSES
Silsbee ISD is ready for the 2012-2013 school year! Student’s first day of class is Monday, August 27, 2012. Classes will begin at 7:50 AM for Kirby and Read Turrrentine Elementary campuses with breakfast in the classroom. All the other campuses will begin at 7:55 AM. Detailed information about Back-to-School may be viewed at the school district’s web site: www.silsbeeisd.org.
With the start of school parents are asked to complete, sign and return many forms. These are necessary and needed as soon as possible. Parents should also verify that the school has the correct phone number, cell phone number, and address on file for their child in case of an emergency.
REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION
The following is required in order to enroll a new student: a copy of the original birth certificate (not a hospital copy); social security card; last report card; immunization records; TAKS or standardized test scores; information on any special services the student has received such as G/T, Special Education, etc.; withdrawal slip from previous school; and a photo ID of parent/guardian. For students who have attended schools in other districts, in addition to the information listed above, bring the records from the previous school. If from another state, bring a copy of the most recent standardized test scores. In addition, parents will need proof of residence. SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS
Supply lists for campuses have been distributed to local merchants. They may also be viewed at www.silsbeeisd.org by campus.
BREAKFAST/LUNCH
Applications for Free & Reduced Meals will be distributed to all children on the first day of school. If parents wish for their child(ren) to be on the meal program, they must complete a new application each year. The Free & Reduced Meals Applications should be completed and returned as soon as possible to ensure that qualifying students receive the benefits of the program. Parents should send a lunch or money for their child(ren) until notified that the application has been approved.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
All bus routes will remain the same as last year. However, if parents need information regarding the bus that their child is to ride, they may contact the Transportation Office at (409) 385-5610. Bus Guidelines may be viewed at www.silsbeeisd.org, Transportation Department.
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Students must be current with all immunizations in order to attend school. Documentation for any immunizations received during the summer must be provided.Immunization requirements and the district’s medication policy may be viewed at www.silsbeeisd.org. If you have any questions regarding your child’s immunizations, call your health care provider or school nurse.
PARENTAL & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The community is encouraged to get involved in the activities of the school district. They can do this by attending ball games, performances, concerts, art exhibits and attending open houses held on the campuses throughout the district. Parents are encouraged to schedule a meeting with their child’s teacher or contact the administrators at their child’s campus if they notice a drop in their child’s performance or a problem that they feel needs to be addressed. Administrators can then schedule meetings with the teaching staff as needed.
Parents, Community Members, and Business Leaders participation on the District Advisory Team (DAT) is needed. If you are willing to become involved, please contact the administration office at (409) 980-7800.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
In the event of inclement weather, parents may check the school web site at www.silsbeeisd.org for closures. In addition, radio and television stations will be notified. Parents may listen to the following radio stations: KLVI AM 560 or KAYD FM 101.7 or view the following television stations: KFDM 6, KBTV 4, or KBMT 12.
REGISTRATION BY CAMPUS
Please note that all campuses will be closed on August 21th for Staff Development.
Kirby Elementary, campus for Pre-K through first grade, new student registration will be conducted August 9-20 from 8:30 AM to11:30 AM and from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. All students registered by August 14, 2012 will have a letter mailed home on August 16, 2012. There will be no registration on August 21 to staff development. “Meet the Teacher” open house will be August 23, 2012. (Times will be announced to the parents/students in the letters mailed on August 16, 2012.) August 24, 2012 is the final day to register from 8:30 AM to 11:00. Parent(s) must complete the registration packet before the student can be scheduled into a class.
Read-Turrentine Elementary, campus for second and third grade, new students registration will be conducted August 14-17 and August 20 and 22 from 8:30- 11:30 AM and 1:00-3:00 PM. There will be no registration on August 21 due to Staff Development. Friday, August 24 is the final day to register from 8:30 AM - 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Laura Reeves Elementary, campus for fourth and fifth grade, new student registration will be conducted August 13-17 and August 20, 22 and 24 from 8:30 AM to noon and from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. There will be no registration on August 21 due to staff development. Schedule pick-up and Open House will be August 23 from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
Edwards-Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School, campus for sixth through eighth grade, will be registering students new to the district from August 8 - 10, 2012. Running start will be August 14th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon for sixth grade, August 15th from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM for seventh grade, and August 15th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon for eighth grade. Running start will include schedule pick-up.
Silsbee High School, campus for ninth through twelfth grade, NEW student registration will be conducted beginning August 6, 2012. Registration will be from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM and from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM each day. Packets for all incoming students will be available beginning August 6, 2012, at the high school. These packets must be picked up and completed prior to registration. Freshman FISH Camp will be August 17 from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM. All Freshmen are encouraged to attend from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM. The freshmen that attend FISH Camp will receive their ID free of charge. Any freshman student that does not attend FISH camp may register and pay for their ID on August 20 from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM.

Parking permits are required to park on the high school campus and may be purchased for $3.00. Students needing a parking permit must provide the following: proof of insurance, a valid driver’s license, license plate number of vehicle(s), and the make/model/color of vehicle(s). Textbooks will also be available at this time. No students will be allowed to complete registration without a packet filled out and signed by a parent/guardian. All questions may be directed to the high school at 409-980-7877 beginning August 6, 2012.

Kirby Elementarywill mail letters on August 16, 2012, to the parents of the student that indicate the class/teacher assignment. “Meet the Teacher” will be August 23, 2012. Times will be announced to the parents/students in the letters mailed on August 16, 2012.
Read-Turrentine Elementary will host an Open House on Thursday, August 23, 2012. Students’ teacher and room assignments will be posted on the front doors of the school at 8:00 AM. Students must come with a parent or guardian at times according to first letter of last name (See schedule below. Students will be able to bring their supplies and meet the teacher. Parents or guardians will also receive beginning-of-the-year paperwork that they can fill out at their leisure and send it to their child’s teacher on the first day of school. **Student room numbers will be posted on the front doors at 8:00 AM. Students and parents will visit the teachers’ room in the following order: Last names beginning w/ A-E--8:15-8:45, F-J--9:00-9:30, K-O--9:45-10:15, P-T--10:30-11:00, and U-Z--11:15-11:45.
Laura Reeves Elementary will host a Parent Night on Thursday, August 23rd from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM for both parents and students to pick up schedules. Students must come with a parent or guardian. All students will be able to get a copy of their schedules, find their classrooms, and meet their teachers. Students may bring all of their school supplies, find their lockers, and leave all supplies in the locker. Each child will be given a handbook with the first of the year forms for parents to fill out and return.
Edwards-Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School: Running start will be August 14th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon for sixth grade, August 15th from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM for seventh grade, and August 15th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon for eighth grade. Running start will include schedule pick-up.
Silsbee High School: Packets for all incoming students will be available beginning August 6 at the high school. These packets must be picked up and completed prior to registration. No student will be allowed to finish registration without a completed registration packet.
FISH Camp will be August 17 from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM. All Freshmen are encouraged to attend from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM. The freshmen that attend FISH Camp will receive their ID free of charge. Any freshman student that does not attend FISH camp may register and pay for their ID on August 20 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM.
Registration for 10th – 12th grade students will be: Seniors – August 17 from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM; Juniors– August 16 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM; and Sophomores – August 16 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
