A message from the Food Service Director
We are excited to be able to serve our students hot, nutritious meals and help with their education. It is important that our students eat a good, healthy breakfast and lunch in order to be ready to learn and further their education.
We are governed by Texas Education Agency in Austin, Texas. Several years ago, food service made a big change in the way that we serve meals to our students. At this time, the government said too many of our children were overweight and something needed to be done. It was decided that schools were the place to start. Congress then passed a law that all school food services must go by the newly established Dietary Guidelines. This law states that when averaging the menus for the week, a student should not receive more than 30% of the needed fat calories and 10% of the needed saturated fat calories.
Although this has been a difficult job, we have worked hard to meet these guidelines and please the students at the same time. We changed from two menus in our district to five menus for the purpose of meeting the Dietary Guidelines and calorie requirements. This was necessary because almost every school has a different set of guidelines based on the age of the students.
